Wales fail to match Poland

The game, the first of two friendly matches in preparation for the new season was played on a very warm summer’s evening in Carmarthen in front of a crowd of 150.

The match was the first time that most of thre Wales girls had come together at this level and for long periods looked second best to a well-organised and physically stronger Polish one.

The visitors took the lead from a corner after 20 minutes when an in-swinging corner fell into the centre of the defence and hit several players before going over the line. It was difficult to see who had the final touch, but Hannah Bluck (Garw) seemed to be the unlucky Welsh player.

The poles continued to dominate most of the first half and clear-cut chances were few and far between for Wales.

The second forty minutes was only just underway when the visitors scored their second and again it came from a set-piece. This time Paulina Dudek got the all-important touch to beat Wales keeper Angharad James.

Wales began to make several substitutions in the early stages of the second half and began to create a few chances, as well as winning their fair share of ball in midfield. Captain Emma Beynon toiled tirelessly in the centre forward position but with little reward.

At the end, Poland were good value for the 2-0 win, but Wales will hope to do better in the second match at Merthyr on Saturday at 2pm. (Admission free).
