Report: Wales Ladies under 19’s played Bulgaria Ladies in an international friendly match at The Stadium in Cwmbran. The teams will meet twice this week, with this being the first game of the week. Both sides put up a fight and the final score was a 2-2 draw.

The match kicked off at 2:00pm and within 3 minutes Wales are given a free kick, just outside the penalty box, Ellie Davies takes the kick but it is headed away by the Bulgarian defence.

Wales begin in a determined fashion and push the Bulgarian defence to its limit, with Wales commanding the game in the Bulgarian side of the pitch. A corner is given, which is taken by Jasmin Dutton, which is headed into the goal by Ellie Davies in the 4th minute, making it 1- nil to the home team.

Wales have another strike on goal in the 9th minute of the game, with Sharla Passariello narrowly missing the net and hitting the goal post.

Wales appear in their element and continue to have attempts at goal, in the 12th minute Sophie Ingle kicks the ball to Jasmin Dutton who heads the ball over the top bar.

Wales have to defend, as Bulgaria attack with vigour, with Lidiya Nacheva having a shot on goal, which is saved by goalkeeper Sophie Dando, in the 18th minute.

Bulgaria make their first substitute of the game with Nadezhda Dimona replacing Monika Razhgeva in the 23rd minute.

In the final minutes of the first half Wales try to go ahead in the game, with two more attempts on goal by Sophie Ingle and Lyndsey Davies, in the 27th and 29th minutes respectively. Both shots are saved by the goalkeeper.

Bulgaria begin to dominate the game and are awarded a corner in the 29th minute, taken by Razhgeva who passes to Tsankova who hits the ball just wide of the goal. Nacheva takes possession of the ball and passes to Desislava Grahlyova who kicks the ball into the back of the home team’s net, making it 1-1 in the 33rd minute.

There is one minute added of extra time, with no attempts on goal from either side, and the first half finishes with Wales 1 and Bulgaria 1, so there is all to play for in the second half.

In the first few minutes of the second half Wales make three substitutes. Kirsty Lewis, Cori Williams and Sharla Passariello come off to make way for Lisa Bird, Mikaela Welford and Danielle Broadhurst.

Wales look like a refreshed and energised team, with a great cross from Ingle to Dutton, who shoots just wide of the goal, in the 51st minute. Within 5 minutes Wales are awarded a free kick taken by Cardiff City’s Jasmin Dutton, but is headed away by Bulgaria’s captain Petia Petkova.

Bulgaria are awarded a free kick in the 75th minute, taken by Desislava Grahlyova, who passes to Velina Koshuleva who strikes wide of the goal.

The away team continue to try and break the Welsh defence and a great pass from Nacheva to Grahlyova results in a goal in the 72nd minute, making it 2 –1 to Bulgaria.

Bulgaria make a substitute with Monika Kirvikova coming on to the pitch and Gergana Tsankova retires to the bench in the 76th minute.

Bulgaria’s Lidiya Nacheva has a shot on goal, but is caught by Welsh goalkeeper Sophie Dando in the 78th minute.

Bulgaria make a substitute in the 81st minute with Veronika Gotseva replacing double goal scorer Desislava Grahlyova.

Wales continue to try and break the Bulgarian defence, and a powerful strike by Cardiff City’s Lisa Bird goes straight to the back of Bulgaria’s net in the 87th minute, taking the match to 2-2.

Bulgaria make an additional substitute with Neli Aanasova coming off and Petia Penkova coming on for the team in the 88th minute.

Bulgaria make the final substitute of the game with Simona Petkova replacing Nadezhda Dimova, in the 90th minute.

Wales keep fighting till the final minutes of the game, with two attempts on goal with one hitting the cross bar in the 89th minute, but the game ends 2-2 at full time.

There was no dominating team on the day, with Wales and Bulgaria both playing equally good football. Wales had two memorable goals with a header from Ellie Davies and a strike by Lisa Bird, and Bulgaria had Desislava Grahlyova to thank for her two goals on the day. With a 2-2 draw it is hard to predict who will win when both teams play each other in two days at Goytre Pitch in Monmouthshire.
