Report: This was the second meeting this week between Wales Ladies under 19 team and Bulgaria in this international friendly game, which was played in Plough Road, Goytre.
Both teams were determined to win after the last meeting ended in 2 -2, and another draw would not suffice. Just before the first half whistle it looked as if history was going to repeat itself with both Wales and Bulgaria each scoring a goal. In the second half Wales were the more dominant side and scored another goal making it 2-1 to the home side. Bulgaria failed to score again in the match making Wales the victorious side that evening.
Wales started off the game in a determined fashion with the first 10 minutes being played in the Bulgarians side of the pitch. Wales had shots on goal, courtesy of Mikaela Welford, but they were saved by the goalkeeper.
Wales persistence soon pays off with a strike from inside the penalty box by Cardiff City’s Lisa Bird, and the ball goes into the back of the net making it 1-0 to the home side in the 14th minute.
Bulgaria are quick to respond with a strike on target from Desislava Grahlyova, which is caught by goalkeeper Sophie Dando.
Bulgaria make their first substitute of the game with Gergana Tsankova being replaced by Neli Atanasova.
Wales are given more opportunities to score through a corner which is taken by Sharla Passariello in the 24th minute, but the ball hits the crossbar. A free kick is awarded minutes later taken by Jasmin Dutton but the ball is headed away by the Bulgarian defence.
Bulgaria attack the Welsh defence and a strike taken from the side of the goal post by Kremena Prodanova goes into the back of the net making it 1 -1 in the 37th minute.
Wales make some great passing shots, making it difficult for Bulgaria to take possession of the ball, but Welford is injured due to a physical clash between a Bulgarian defender, and has to go off the pitch for treatment, but she does return to the pitch.
2 minutes of extra time are added, with no more attempts on goal from either side.
At the beginning of the second half Wales make their first substitutions with Mikaela Welford and Lisa Bird coming off for Cori Williams and Lyndsey Davies.
The Bulgarians begin the second half with rejuvenated energy and make some solid passes and are awarded a corner in the 60th minute, but it was headed away by Ellie Davies. Bulgaria make a substitute with Veronika Gotseva replacing Nadezhda Dimova.
In the 68th minute Bulgaria have a chance to be ahead in the game, but a pass from Velina Koshuleva to Kremena Prodanova is not enough as the ball is deflected off the Wales keeper.
Wales attack and a long run down the side of the pitch by Passariello ends in vain as she kicks the ball just wide of the goal in the 75th minute.
The game continues to be played in the Bulgarians defence and in the 88th minute the Wales captain Sophie Ingle scores a goal making it 2-1.
Three minutes of extra time are added and Wales still continue to make an attempt on goal, with Rachel Rowe kicking the ball down the side line with the ball narrowly missing the net.
In the final minutes Bulgaria make their final substitutions of the game with Velizara Vladimirova, Velina Koshuleva, Roksana Shahanska and Desislava Grahlyova coming off to make way for Monika Kirvikova, Simona Petkova, Maria Keleva and Silviya Todorova.
At the final whistle Wales have won with 2 goals to 1. Wales were the stronger team on the day, but Bulgaria did put up a strong defence which made it an exciting game to watch.
