News - Under 21 Squad v Romania

Posted: 4 August 2008

Wales Intermediate Teams Manager has named his squad for the vital UEFA Under 21 qualifying match at the Racecourse, Wrexham on Wednesday 20th August 2008. Kick off is at 6pm.

The squad is larger than usual, in order that all eligible players can be registered two weeks in advance with UEFA for the game. It will then be cut-back to eighteen players prior to the squad meeting-up.

The squad is:

Wayne Hennessey (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Owain Fon Williams (Stockport County)

Rhys Taylor (Chelsea)

Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur

Neal Eardley (Oldham Athletic)

Chris Gunter (Tottenham Hotspur)

Grant Basey (Charlton Athletic)

Darcy Blake (Cardiff City)

Lewin Nyatanga (Derby County)

Christian Ribeiro (Bristol City)

Rhoys Wiggins (Crystal Palace)

Joe Jacobson (Bristol Rovers)

Mike Williams (Wrexham)

Rhys Williams (Middlesbrough)

Nicky Adams (Leicester City)

Mark Bradley (Walsall)

Jack Collison (West Ham United)

David Edwards (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Andy King (Leicester City)

Joe Ledley (Cardiff City)

Shaun MacDonald (Swansea City)

Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal)

Jonathan Brown (Cardiff City)

Simon Church (Reading)

David Cotterill (Sheffield United)

Craig Davies (Oldham Athletic)

Ched Evans (Manchester City)

Sam Vokes (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Victory in this match would mean that Wales win the group. There is still one final game to go, next month in Romania.

Missing from this squad is Joe Allen (Swansea City) who is suspended for two yellow cards.

Brian Flynn said: 'This really is the big one and we need all the support from the Welsh fans possible at the Racecourse on the night.'

'We know what we have to do. I, and other members of my staff, have all seen Romania play and we certainly do not underestimate them. However, we have done so much hard work over the last year, that we really must look to win the group at home and book our place in the October play-offs'.

'We have selected a large squad so that I have the flexibility to look at certain positions now over the next couple of weeks. When we get closer to the game, some of the players will be released and that could involve some of the senior players then reverting to John Toshack's squad for the friendly with Georgia.'

'John and I have spoken at length regarding the games and he is happy for me to have whoever I think I need for the Romania match. It would be such a huge boost for Welsh Football for us to take that next step towards qualifying for a major finals.'

'We are close to winning this group through the sheer hard work and application of a great bunch of youngsters. It has been a pleasure for myself, David Williams, Alan Curtis and Mark Morris to work with them.'
