World’s top most professional tennis player, Simona Halep had made an out of practice start for her return from the long break of COVID-19.

After her return, she found to edge a seesaw fight against Slovenian Polona Hercog which was around 6-1 1-6 7-6(3) at the initial round of the Prague Open on August 11, 2020.

Closing of the Match

After the long term break, she moved 5-3 ahead during the third set and dropped her own serve before wasting three match points. The stress on her increased when she needed three more match points to win the match! She also missed her seventh chance to close out the game in a tiebreak.

Simona Halep also missed the Palermo Ladies Open which was held during the first week of August. She decided to play the match on the WTA tour. She was very happy and delighted as she got the first victory after the six months break.

Simona Halep withdrew herself from the new season’s Palermo Ladies Open because of the pandemic. She made this decision as there were too many COVID cases in her city and she also had anxiety to travel during the crisis. She cancelled her 31st Palermo Open tournament for which she was eagerly waiting for so long.

In a press release, she also said that she had a lot of pressure and stress for this match. The Prague Open was a short tournament and she played it well. After the second match, she felt tired but she also knew that everyone was in the same position and she followed the plans and went back for the fight.

The enthusiasm for fighting and winning the match helped her to defeat her opponents and win the match. According to her, it feels great to call it the best match and she is not sure for the next one to play for three hours.

The WTA Tour had begun during the last week in Palermo by following the strict health and safety protocols that are set by the local authorities. It ensured that there must be a limited number of fans inside the stadium and players are restricted to do handshakes after the match ends.

In the media, she also confessed that playing the match with such stringent regulations isn’t that easy. All the players had no choice expect to adjust to the situation. Now, they all are in and everyone follows the rules which are set by the authorities.

The Romanian also added that she will soon make a decision about her participation in another major tournament, U.S Open which will be beginning from August 31, 2020. After playing this week’s match in Prague, she will need to get ready for the US Open.

Simona Halep Makes Second Round of Prague Open

Top-seeded Halep had made a tough fight to make her position for the second round in the Prague Open. After she won the Dubai championship WTA title for her 20th career in February, this Prague Open is her first match.

She will now compete against the next Czech wild card named Barbora Krejcikova. Another professional player, Petra Matric, made her place in the semi-finals in Palermo during the first week of August. She defeated Varvara Gracheva and faced Kristyna Pliskova during the second tennis round.

Apart from requiring a medical timeout between the matches, Martic broke her competitor’s serve twice to seal a convincing win.

Another professional player, Elise Mertens fought against Jasmine Paolini.

The second major European tournament of WTA will begin amidst the COVID-19 pandemic following strict health protocols as compared to Palermo Open.
