Austrian Tennis Player- Dominic Thiem has displayed his support for Djokovic after his Adria Tour received criticism from various sources.

The tour was supposed to be an “exhibition tournament” for the top tennis stars, however, it was being held during the pandemic time which made it a controversial subject. Thiem has been a part of this tour and is planning for the US Open now.

Several players were diagnosed positive for the virus’s infection during this tour, which brought in the center of condemnations. The tour was organized by Novak Djokovic, players like Viktor Troicki, Grigor Dimitrov, and Borna Coric were infected with the Coronavirus. The final matches were canceled after this news spread out.

This was a major ‘fallout’ for the event and its organization, attracting comments about not following norms of social distancing and community gatherings. Thiem added to his statement that this upbraiding of his competitor was biased and unjust. He said that Novak did not go against the rules nor did he force the players to join the event.

Dominic also added that Djokovic didn’t even push the players to go and interact with the spectators. The players took these decisions willingly and that the event was held for a ‘good cause’. The Tour has invited various top tennis stars like Thiem himself along with Alexander Zverev, Dušan Lajović, and Filip Krajinović.

However, the tournament’s latter matches- which would have been held in Bosnia, Montenegro, and Herzegovina- were canceled. This decision was taken after Novak Djokovic was found COVID-19 positive during the Adria Tour. Dominic also says that the social distancing rules were jeopardized by the players because of their ‘excitement’.

He said that this isn’t only Djokovic’s fault, it is a mistake made by all the players. And that time has passed giving fruitful results, as the players have successfully recovered. Dominic added to this statement that we all learn by making mistakes. All players are at fault somewhere and they know it, however, they have learned and everything seems to be fine.

What about the US Open?

Dominic Thiem’s latest win was at the Bett1Aces tournament on 19th July 2020. The event has followed all necessary regulations for social distancing and player/ staff safety. It was organized at an old airport hangar in Berlin.

Thiem has now focused all his attention on the US Open, which will be held around the last week of August. The Austrian player agrees that he holds no second thoughts on being a part of the tournament in New York. He also said that the Bett1Aces tournament can be taken as an example for organizing a safe tournament.

He further states that he trusts the organizing committee and that they will maintain a safe environment for the players and other staff. Dominic has supported the concept of adapting and moving on with the tournaments; play them and regular matches. But, he will miss thousands of people and fans cheering from the stands.

Thiem strongly believes that the tour and tennis will make a comeback, slowly but eventually. Several players and authorities have questioned the commencement of the US Open. Moreover, the event organizers should adhere to the health & safety measures set according to the location.

What was special about the Adria Tour?

Just like other sports, Tennis has a hard blow by this widespread pandemic situation. Multiple tournaments and events have been postponed or even canceled. This has been exceedingly difficult for the players with low-ranks to survive during this phase.

Being the ATP Player Council’s President, Novak Djokovic invited the leading players to come together and contribute funds. However, Thiem had comparatively less interest in this cause. He clearly said that there are players or people who really deserve this aid while there are a few who don’t.

Theim hopes to place his efforts and funds on the right path.
