Tokyo 2020: Brazilian Tennis Lost its Main Doubles Player due to Appendicitis

Tokyo 2020 Brazilian tennis lost its main doubles player due to appendicitis

Bruno Soares, 13th in the world rankings, will not be able to compete in the Olympic Games. In his place is Marcelo Demoliner, 52nd.

Brazilian tennis player Bruno Soares will miss the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games due to appendicitis that was diagnosed as soon as he landed in the Japanese capital, Olympic sources reported this Wednesday.

Soares, 39, who stands out for his play in doubles, felt severe abdominal pain on the plane in which he was travelling to Japan and, after disembarking, he was admitted to a hospital for tests, which detected inflammation.

“The athlete received a diagnosis of appendicitis, indicating surgery, which prevents him from playing the Games. Bruno will undergo a surgical intervention this Wednesday, the 21st, at the Tokyo Toranomon Hospital ”, said the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), in a statement.

Soares doubles champion of the 2020 US Open alongside Croatian Mate Pavic, with whom he closed last year as the number 1 doubles, was considered one of the strong medal candidates for the Brazilian delegation in Tokyo.

Champion of three Grand Slam titles in doubles and currently the 13th place in the world rankings, the tennis player had planned to play the men’s competition in Tokyo alongside Marcelo Melo (18th in the ATP doubles classification). With the loss, the COB announced on Wednesday that Marcelo Demoliner (52nd) will replace Soares in the doubles tournament.

The Brazilians Thiago Monteiro and Joao Menezes will already compete in the men’s individual competition, while the tennis players Luisa Stefani and Laura Pigossi will compete in the doubles modality in the women’s category.

For the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Brazil will have a delegation of 302 athletes, a record for the country in a competition held abroad. Experts estimate that he can win up to 20 medals in Japan, one more than the 19 achieved in Rio 2016, so far the best result in its history.
